​Kent Bailo, 74, from Ortonville, Michigan, is a trailblazer in the world of women’s wrestling. Recognized as Wrestling USA's "Man-of-the-Year" in 2004, Bailo’s pioneering efforts have played a crucial role in advancing the sport. Bailo’s impact began in 1997 with the creation of Michigan’s first girls wrestling state championship, which attracted 116 participants. The following year, he founded the United States Girls Wrestling Association (USGWA) and launched the inaugural Girls High School Wrestling National Championship, drawing 272 wrestlers from 35 states. His visionary work was instrumental in the inclusion of women’s wrestling in the 2004 Olympics. In addition to his organizing achievements, Bailo has an impressive record as a coach with a 251-65-2 record and has refereed 12 Michigan High School State Finals and 7 NCAA Division III Championships. His commitment to folkstyle wrestling has helped make the sport more accessible and appealing to female wrestlers. To honor his groundbreaking contributions, the 2024 Kent Bailo Classic will be held on January 3rd and 4th, 2025. This event aims to be the premier high school girls wrestling tournament in the country, celebrating Bailo’s legacy and continuing his mission to elevate women’s wrestling.
